V-day cards

As promised… I'm enjoying where these are going and looking forward to working on them more this week.

Magenta

February 6, 2010 by Sarah

Primarily, today was spent several hours doing what we’ll call creating a new future; suffice it to say 2010 will be a year of changes.

Not very creative but definitely a good thing – it didn’t give me the usual jazzed up feeling I get when I make something, though, so I squeezed in a little something before drinks with a friend.

I’m feeling rather behind in the whole Valentine’s card making department so I must get on that with much more focus tomorrow! I’ve been enjoying an aimless Thing a Day so far – but this week will be filled with pink and red! I spent some time organizing and planning out what those might look like.

I am extremely proud of my holiday card last year – problem is, for my mind at least, their main color – magenta – is the color I want to use for my Valentine’s and I feel boring using it again so soon. (But I will – see last photo.)

Oh, and I’m planning on setting up an Etsy shop this month for sure. I don’t have a ton of time – see above creating a new future time draw – any advice about setting up is much appreciated.

Love Letter

February 6, 2010 by Sarah

Today, February 5th, would have been my grandfather’s birthday. As I’ve absorbed the Band of Brothers miniseries times over the last year, I’ve been thinking a lot about my grandfather and his time in Europe near the end, and after, the war having  served in the Army Corps of Engineers.

I lament, that while I nabbed – what I now know (from BoB) – as his “dress” uniform jacket when I was 14, I decided at some point that I no longer needed it.

I’m so visual, and while I know BoB was just a recreation, it has given me images of the soldiers in Europe during and after the war and with it, an image of my grandfather there.

I love imagining him in his dress uniform now that I have a vivid picture in my mind – how handsome he must have looked!

With this telegram my cousin unearthed recently, I imagine him there, standing at the Western Union counter, “disgusted homesick,” writing my grandmother, whom he adored until the day he died, this enchanting telegram:

STILL DELAYED MARSEILLE DISGUSTED HOMESICK NO SHIPS

[It may not look it, but I fussed with the telegram forever; I couldn't be satisfied by a mere b/w photo of the telegram. No. I had to re-create the patina of years through Photoshop.]

Theo Kitty

Two nights before Halloween, I was adopted by a black cat. He is sweet, affectionate and must have been abandoned but now he’s all mine. So… after a hellish day at work, all I could muster this evening was some photo time with him (and a little cuddling).

I’m hoping the weekend will bring some time to reflect more and plan out / prepare for some projects for next week so I’m a wee bit more focused after a crazy day.

Just some experimenting with filters in photoshop as a chance to play with a favorite photo – green orchids!

Ideas beget ideas…

February 2, 2010 by Sarah
Today I give y’all a scan from last year’s TAD, which grew from a few ideas on January 1 to this by the end of February – all the ideas I had, the ideas that spurned other ideas, etc., etc. but which did not get accomplished. I have an entirely new list for this year, but not wanting to forget any ideas, nor the idea it generated, I wanted to start with the list of Ideas created during last year’s TAD.

How this list grew, and how several ideas would rush to me at once, got me thinking about how ideas beget ideas and possibilities beget possibilities. Relaying this to a friend, she suggested I watch this TED talk by Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) on creativity and how ideas come forth to us and I was enchanted:
Enjoy! It’s long, but well, well worth it. (At 19 minutes, perhaps could be considered a TAD?)

Travel Box

February 1, 2010 by Sarah
Typically, the first day or week of TAD means a gift for my father’s birthday. This year he is headed to France a bit before his birthday so this has been a bit of a rush. It’s just a simple take out box with those vintage-looking stickers with postage marks and the like on them. In it will go some Euros for while he’s there. I’m a little sad to see this go – I know this crafty looking recepticle will be tossed along with the wrapping paper.

I’m gearing up for TAD 2010 with a little test post and an enchanting box I photographed last year during TAD at the LA Natural History Museum. Sad my only souvenir was a photo. I want to make something with boxes like these.

Flowers from Mexico…

March 9, 2009 by Sarah

During TAD, I began a concerted effort on my flower notecards and had hoped to create a series of cards with flowers in each color of the spectrum. I was pondering to myself where to find green flowers – not really an abundance of them, after all.

Then at my dear old friend’s wedding in Mexico, I was fortunate enough to have these gorgeous green orchids be part of the decorations.

More flower photos – and others I took in Mexico – to follow soon.
